5 Floor Heat Myths 2022

Bashing the 5 common myths about floor heating that we’ve seen in the trade.

5 MYTHS ABOUT FLOOR HEAT

When it comes to floor heating, there are a lot of myths floating around that people believe are true. But the truth is, you can’t believe everything you hear—especially when it comes to floor heating.

Floor Heat Myths

Myth #1: The heat hurts my floors.

This is a common concern for people who are new to floor heating. The truth is that it’s actually humidity in the air that hurts floors like wood, and has nothing to do with the heat/temp of the floors. In fact, high moisture levels can cause more damage than any heat you might experience from your flooring system!

If you’re worried about this happening, we recommend getting a humidifier and setting it up so it runs all day long (especially in winter) so that your home stays nice and dry!

Myth #2: It’s super expensive.

It’s actually not as expensive as you might think. An average heat floor installation costs around $10 per square foot, which means if you have a 40-square-foot bathroom, it will cost around $400 to heat it! You can also choose to heat specific areas where there is high traffic instead of an entire room, like around a kitchen island or next to the bathtub.

Floor heat is one of the best ways to make your house cozy, but there are some common myths about it that can make you think twice before committing. We’ve debunked the most common ones here, so you can make sure you’re getting everything right when you install floor heat!

Myth #3: It’s complicated to install.

It’s true that hydronic (which uses boilers and tubes) can be complicated, but electric mats are easy! Electric mats get laid during the existing floor installation. If you add tile heat to a tile installation, for example, all you have to do is lay the mats on top of the subfloor, then cement them down and lay your tile as usual. If you’re heating wood floors, just lay the mat on top of the subfloor and go ahead and put down your wood flooring as usual.

Myth #4: Floor heat raises your floors.

Floor heating isn’t going to raise your floors. The cable for the tile is 1/8″ thick, and the wires for Warmstep, our wood heating system, are as thin as a credit card. That’s right—your floor won’t be raised by any more than a millimeter!

Myth #5: It’s expensive to run.

Heating floors with electric resistance are actually more efficient than heating rooms with forced air. Unlike HVAC systems, which blow air that escapes out or blows heat that stays towards the ceiling, electric floor heat reaches you right away so you utilize 100% of the energy used. You can also schedule it to be on at specific times so it’s not working all day and night—you can set it to come on when you get home from work and shut off around bedtime. And since it’s all about personal comfort, not everyone needs their floor at the same temperature all day long!

Final Thoughts

We hope this blog has helped set the record straight on floor heat. There are plenty of exciting, cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable and energy-efficient. So the next time you consult with an HVAC contractor or sit down at your computer to browse some local flooring options, consider a form of floor heat such as radiant heating or electric underfloor heating. It’s a great investment for your home that brings a host of benefits. For more information on How Much Floor Heat Costs to Run, check out our article. Visit us online or call us at (800)308-8057.
